Bernalillo County Emergency Communications Leads New Mexico’s Move to Next Generation 911

Big news for public safety in New Mexico! Bernalillo County Emergency Communications has been selected as the beta site to launch a brand-new Next Generation 911 (NG911) system. This new call-handling software will bring faster, smarter, and more accurate emergency response to the community.

Once fully rolled out, NG911 will use digital, internet-based technology to help emergency teams locate and reach people in need much more precisely than older systems. It’s a major upgrade from the old way, where 911 calls were routed based only on cell tower or landline location.

What Makes NG911 So Special?

Besides improving how quickly and accurately responders can find you, NG911 also allows emergency centers to receive more information, like:

  • Photos from the scene
  • Live video streams
  • Surveillance camera footage

This means first responders will have a better idea of what’s happening before they even arrive, which can make a huge difference in how emergencies are handled.

Public Education Coming Soon

Bernalillo County Emergency Communications will launch a public education campaign later this year to help residents understand how to use the new NG911 features safely and effectively. Community members will get clear information before the system is fully activated.

Emergency Communications Director Robbie McCormick shared his excitement, saying, “Our center is the first in New Mexico to have this capability. We’re proud to play a key role in helping other call centers transition to this important new system.”

A Big Step for New Mexico

The New Mexico Department of Finance and Administration’s NM-911 Bureau, along with Motorola Next Generation Core Services, selected Bernalillo County to lead the way for the statewide move to NG911.

The goal is for all emergency communication centers across New Mexico to be using the new platform by August 2025.

Bernalillo County Emergency Communications is leading the charge toward a smarter, faster future for emergency response in New Mexico. With Next Generation 911, dispatchers will have better tools to locate emergencies and help people more quickly and accurately. Thanks to this innovation, the community can look forward to safer, faster, and more efficient emergency services.
