New Pre-Apprenticeship Program at West Mesa High School Creates Career Opportunities for Students

Bernalillo County is teaming up with community partners to open exciting new doors for high school students! Thanks to a unique partnership between Bernalillo County, the ABC Community School Partnership, Local 412 Plumbers and Pipefitters, and the Outreach and Education Foundation, a brand-new pre-apprenticeship program has launched at West Mesa High School.

This is the first program of its kind in the area, connecting students directly with real-world training and experiences in the construction trades.

A Groundbreaking Collaboration

What makes this program so special is how many different groups came together to make it happen. It’s a historic partnership between:

  • County government
  • A public high school
  • A registered apprenticeship program
  • A local labor union

Together, they are creating stronger career technical education (CTE) options and giving students a clear pathway into skilled trade careers.

The idea started with strong leadership from District 1 Bernalillo County Commissioner Barbara Baca and State Representative Joy Garratt, both passionate about giving students more opportunities to succeed after high school.

Commissioner Barbara Baca, a proud graduate of West Mesa High School, shared, “By empowering students with skills in the construction trades, we’re creating new job opportunities and building a stronger economy for our community.”

State Rep. Joy Garratt added, “This program shows the power of working together for a common cause. We are helping create the next generation of skilled workers, and I’m thrilled to see this positive change in education.”

What the Program Offers Students

Students who join the pre-apprenticeship program will receive:

  • Hands-on training in real construction trade skills
  • Mentorship from experienced industry professionals
  • Opportunities to explore high-demand careers
  • A strong foundation to enter an apprenticeship or the workforce right after graduation

This experience not only prepares students for future careers but also boosts their confidence and helps them see the value of skilled trades in today’s economy.

Joan Baker, executive director of the 412 Outreach and Education Foundation, said, “We are proud to pioneer this effort. It’s a big step in helping young people gain valuable skills and preparing them for a brighter economic future.”

A Bright Future Ahead

The first group of students has already started their training, and Bernalillo County and its partners are committed to expanding these opportunities. They believe that by investing in youth, they are also investing in stronger families, a better workforce, and a healthier regional economy.

Programs like this not only open career doors but also show young people that success can be built with skills, hard work, and the right support system.

The launch of the pre-apprenticeship program at West Mesa High School is a major win for students, families, and the entire Bernalillo County community. By creating real-world pathways to careers in construction and skilled trades, local leaders are helping students build brighter futures. This innovative program shows the power of partnerships—and it’s only the beginning of even more opportunities ahead.
