Albuquerque Sign Language Academy Celebrates New Campus Milestone with Beam Signing Ceremony

The Albuquerque Sign Language Academy (ASLA) is celebrating a very special moment in its journey — the Beam Signing Ceremony for its brand-new campus! This exciting event marks a big step forward for the school, its students, and the community. Let’s find out more about this important occasion and why it means so much.

A Special Day for ASLA and the Community

On Wednesday, April 16, at 1 p.m., ASLA will host its Beam Signing Ceremony at the site of its future school campus. The new location is at the intersection of Tyler Road and Edith Boulevard NE, just north of Osuna Road.

This ceremony is more than just a construction update — it’s a celebration of hard work, community support, and a bright future for inclusive education in Albuquerque.

About the New Campus

The new school is being built on land owned by Bernalillo County, showing a strong partnership between the county and ASLA. Since the academy first opened in 2010, its enrollment has more than doubled. In fact, there’s still a waiting list, proving just how important the school’s work is!

ASLA is one of the few schools that uses a unique dual-language model to serve deaf, hard of hearing, and hearing students together. This model helps create a welcoming, understanding environment for all learners.

Words of Support from Leaders

District 1 Commissioner Barbara Baca shared her excitement, saying that the partnership with ASLA shows Bernalillo County’s commitment to making education inclusive for everyone. She said the new campus will bring a lot of positive change to the community.

ASLA’s Executive Director, Rafe Martinez, also expressed his gratitude. He said the dream of a new campus could not have come true without the strong support from Bernalillo County, the State of New Mexico, and many others who believed in the mission.

Building an Accessible Future

The construction of ASLA’s new home is happening thanks to the efforts of many partners, including Bernalillo County, the U.S. Department of Education, RMKM Architecture, E.B. Construction, and others.

With a bigger and better space, ASLA will continue its important work: building an accessible, supportive future for deaf, hard of hearing, and hearing students across Albuquerque.

The Beam Signing Ceremony for ASLA’s new campus is a proud and emotional moment for everyone involved. It’s a reminder of what can happen when a community comes together to support inclusive education and build a better future. The new campus will give ASLA students the space and opportunities they need to learn, grow, and succeed.
