April is a very important month — it’s Child Abuse Awareness Month. This month, we are reminded of the importance of protecting our youngest and most vulnerable community members. At the Bernalillo County District Attorney’s Office, we work hard to make sure that children who have been through trauma feel safe, supported, and cared for when they visit us.
Making Children Feel Safe and Welcome
Sometimes, young kids who have been victims of crime or have witnessed something scary have to come to our office. These are little ones who may already be feeling scared, confused, or overwhelmed. That’s why we have special rooms set up just for them. These spaces are designed to help children feel calm, comfortable, and safe while they meet with our staff.
Our goal is simple: we want every child who walks through our doors to know that they are in a place where people care about them and want to help.
New Improvements to Our Children’s Playroom
This week, our team of advocates and attorneys from the Special Victims Unit came together to refresh our children’s playroom. This isn’t just any playroom — it’s also the place where young children are sometimes interviewed about their experiences. It’s very important for this space to be welcoming and non-threatening.
We added new activities, toys, and items that are fun and safe for kids of all ages. Whether they want to read a book, color a picture, or simply relax, there’s something for everyone. These little touches make a big difference in helping children feel at ease during what can be a very difficult time.
Why This Matters
Creating a welcoming and child-friendly environment is part of our ongoing effort to support victims and their families. We believe that healing begins with feeling safe, and every small improvement we make to our office can help a child feel less afraid and more understood.
