Bernalillo County is celebrating a big step forward for public safety and green energy. Today, county leaders officially broke ground on the brand-new Fire Station #36, an energy-efficient facility that will feature New Mexico’s first-ever electric fire truck and an on-site solar power system.
The new station is located on Edith Boulevard NE, near Osuna Road NE. It will replace the older station currently on Bear Canyon Road.
District 2 Commissioner Barbara Baca called the project a “symbol of safety, sustainability, and community collaboration.” She said the new fire station shows what can happen when leaders listen to residents, focus on innovation, and invest in the future.
What Will the New Fire Station Include?
The new Fire Station #36 is designed to meet the needs of modern firefighters and the community. It will have:
- 12 bunks for firefighters
- 4 large bays for fire trucks and equipment
- Showers and a day room
- A spacious kitchen
- Support services needed for everyday operations
An important part of the plan is a special community outreach building. This was a highly requested addition during the public engagement meetings, and it will help bring the fire department even closer to the people they serve.
Community Voices Shaped the Project
Deputy County Manager of Public Safety Greg Perez said community feedback was crucial in shaping the final design. Thanks to that input, the station will not only serve firefighters better but also make the neighborhood stronger and more connected.
The fire station will be partially powered by solar energy, showing Bernalillo County’s commitment to sustainability. Having New Mexico’s first electric fire truck will also set a new standard for fire departments across the state.
How Much Will It Cost and When Will It Be Ready?
The total cost for the project is about $15.8 million. The money is coming from several sources, including Bernalillo County’s general funds, public safety bonds, fire impact fees, and grants from the State of New Mexico.
The building’s design was handled by SMPC Architects, and the construction work will be done by HB Construction. If everything goes as planned, Fire Station #36 should be finished and ready to open by December 2026.
The new Fire Station #36 is a big win for Bernalillo County. It blends the latest in green technology with strong community ties and modern firefighting needs. By investing in solar power, electric vehicles, and community engagement, BernCo is not just building a fire station—it’s building a better future. Residents can look forward to a safer, more sustainable neighborhood once the station is complete.
