Bernalillo County Creates New Economic Development Steering Committee

Bernalillo County, New Mexico, is giving local citizens a fresh chance to help shape the county’s economic future. A new nine-member steering committee has been created to work closely with the Economic Development Department, and applications are now open for interested community members.

What is the New Steering Committee About?

The Board of County Commissioners recently approved the nominations of five members — one from each district — to start the committee. Their main goal will be to suggest practical ways for the county to better support small businesses and help them access important economic development resources.

The five nominated members are:
Michael Guerrero (District 1)
Javier Rojo (District 2)
Joan Baker (District 3)
Tim MacEachen (District 4)
Kelly O’Donnell (District 5)

Together, these five members will choose four more individuals to complete the nine-member committee. The full group will make sure there’s fair representation from urban, rural, and tribal communities and will include people with different business and organizational skills.

How to Apply for the Committee

Bernalillo County is now accepting applications for the four open spots on the steering committee. If you want to make a real difference in local economic development, here’s what you need to do:

  • Fill out the attached nomination form.
  • Include your résumé.
  • Email your documents to [email protected].

Alternatively, you can mail your application and résumé to:

Economic Development
415 Silver Ave. SW – 8th Floor
Albuquerque, NM 87102

The deadline for applications is April 30.

What Happens Next?

The new steering committee will meet several times over the coming months. They will carefully study the local economic environment, collect ideas, and make their final recommendations to the Board of County Commissioners by October 2025.

To help with this process, the Economic Development Department will hire a professional polling firm to run a survey. In addition, at least three “community dialogue” meetings will be organized, giving the public a chance to share their opinions and suggestions on key economic development topics.

This is an exciting opportunity for community members to play a direct role in shaping Bernalillo County’s economic strategy. By bringing together people with diverse skills and backgrounds, the steering committee aims to create stronger support systems for small businesses and help communities thrive. If you have a passion for local economic growth and want your voice to be heard, don’t miss the chance to apply and be part of this important effort.
