A 17-year-old boy and his mother have been ordered to remain in custody after being accused of killing a man during a confrontation in Southeast Albuquerque. The two suspects have been identified as Munah Green, 44, and her teenage son, Rickey Rogers.
What Happened?
According to Albuquerque Police, the deadly shooting took place last Thursday. A woman called 911 after two people were reportedly banging on her front door. Her boyfriend, Richard Powell, went outside to confront them.
That’s when, police say, Munah Green told her son to shoot. Witnesses reported that Rickey Rogers pulled out a gun and fired multiple shots, hitting Powell several times. Powell died at the scene from his injuries.
Charges and Investigation
Both Green and her son were arrested and charged in connection with Powell’s death. Police believe the mother played an active role by encouraging the shooting.
As the case moves forward, the Bernalillo County District Attorney’s Office is reviewing whether the 17-year-old can be charged as an adult because of the seriousness of the crime. No final decision has been made yet.
Suspects Will Remain in Custody
A judge has ruled that both suspects will stay in jail as they await trial. Due to the violent nature of the crime, the court determined they pose a risk to public safety.
Community Concerns
The incident has shocked many in the neighborhood and raised concerns about gun violence involving teens and parental influence in violent crimes. It also brings attention to how quickly disputes can turn deadly when weapons are involved.
The killing of Richard Powell has left a family mourning and a community asking for justice. With both Munah Green and her son Rickey Rogers in custody, the legal system is now working to determine how the teen will be charged and what penalties the two will face. This tragic case is a reminder of how serious consequences can follow moments of violence and poor decisions.
