Lucas Herron Sentenced to 19 and a Half Years in Prison For the Stabbing Death of Daniel Sandoval

Albuquerque, NM – This morning, a judge sentenced Lucas Herron to 19 and a half years in prison for second degree murder, two counts of tampering with evidence, and contributing to the delinquency of a minor. A separate trial determining whether the habitual offender enhancement will apply will be set at a later date, this enhancement could increase the sentence time by a total of an additional 12 years.

On April 7, 2018 officers were dispatched to a stabbing at an Albertson’s grocery store located off of Rio Bravo Boulevard. When officers arrived, they found Daniel Sandoval unresponsive with a stab wound to the chest. Sandoval’s wife spoke with deputies and discovered that he and the defendant, Lucas Herron, had gotten into a verbal then physical altercation. Herron made a couple of derogatory comments towards Sandoval and his wife when they were entering the grocery store. Surveillance footage showed the defendant stab Sandoval with a six-inch blade, then run out of the store with his younger brother. Officers detained Herron and his younger brother after they had jumped a fence across the street of the store.

“The facts of this case are terrifying as Daniel and his wife Felicia were simply visiting the grocery store before Mr. Herron verbally and eventually physically terrorized them, resulting in Daniel’s death,” said District Attorney Raul Torrez. “I hope Mrs. Sandoval and Daniel’s family and friends receive a sense of closure knowing that Mr. Herron will be in prison for nearly two decades.”
