National Safety Month Sparks Gun Safety Awareness Event on June 4
Free Gun Locks, Raffle for Biometric Gun Safes, Live Demonstration of Guns Forged into Garden Tools and a live performance by the La Mesa Elementary School Baile Folklórico
Albuquerque, N.M. – Over the last decade, the impacts of a rise in gun-related violence have been seen and felt nationwide and throughout New Mexico. The Bernalillo County District Attorney’s Office, in partnership with New Mexicans to Prevent Gun Violence (NMPGV), will help raise awareness and offer education on this issue by sponsoring Gun Safety Awareness Day.
The event will offer free gun locks and food and will include a raffle for two biometric gun safes and a live demonstration by NMPGV’s Guns to Gardens gun buyback program, which repurposes guns into garden tools. There will also be activities for children and adults to learn more about gun safety and a live dance performance.
Gun Safety Awareness Day
Saturday, June 4th, 11 am – 2:00 pm
La Mesa Presbyterian Church
7401 Copper Ave NE, Albuquerque, NM 87108
“Addressing the concerning level of gun violence in our community starts with events like this one, which improve gun safety literacy, provide resources for safe and responsible gun ownership, and offer an opportunity for firearm repurposing,” District Attorney Raúl Torrez said. “Thank you to all of our community partners who worked with us to make Gun Safety Awareness Day happen.”
Other gun safety events to be held throughout the month of June will include the first Guns to Gardens National Buyback Day, which will be held at La Mesa Presbyterian Church on June 11. Community members will be able to anonymously bring their unwanted firearms to be forged and turned into garden tools. Each attendee who brings an unwanted gun for repurposing will receive a gift card. More details on Gun Buyback Day will be provided in early June.
