New Mexico Supreme Court Reverses Adrian Avila’s Pretrial Release

Albuquerque, N.M. – Today the New Mexico Supreme Court granted an appeal filed by the Second Judicial District Attorney’s Office after a District Court in Albuquerque authorized the pretrial release of murderer Adrian Avila.

In its appeal of the District Court’s decision, the District Attorney’s Office argued that “the State established grounds to believe that the Defendant planned and executed this series of highly dangerous crimes with deliberation and at the risk of far greater consequences than any judicial remedy for a violation of conditions of release.”

In the wake of today’s ruling, District Attorney Raul Torrez praised the Supreme Court for its decision. “Today is a good day for our community and for the criminal justice system,” said Torrez. “The Supreme Court made the right call and I hope the family of Elias Ortero can sleep a little better tonight knowing Mr. Avila will be remanded back to custody.”
