Today a jury convicted Muhammad Syed of First Degree Murder. It took the jury less than two hours to reach a verdict.
In July, 2022, Aftab Hussein was ambushed with an assault rifle as he got out of his car near his home in NE Albuquerque. Syed will be sentenced to life in prison for the crime.
Syed is also facing additional trials for the murders of two other victims, Muhammad Afzaal Hussain and Naeem Hussain who were also shot and killed in 2022. Each murder case will be tried separately. Those trials will take place at a later date.
"This is another example of the amazing prosecutors in this office getting the job done and getting some justice for the victims," said Bernalillo County District Attorney Sam Bregman.

TEEN CHARGED WITH FIRING GUNSHOTS AT MULTIPLE LOCATIONS, INCLUDING WEST MESA HIGH SCHOOL -- WILL REMAIN IN CUSTODY.
Today a judge ruled 18-year-old Josiah Strongarm will remain in custody as his case goes through the judicial system. Investigators say February 26th, Strongarm went on a week-long shooting spree, firing gunshots from a car. One of the locations was West Mesa High School. When interviewed by police, Strongarm told them he fired shots at that location "because there were a lot of kids coming out of the school."
The Bernalillo County District Attorney's office requested that the court hold Strongarm in custody and argued the extreme dangerousness of his behavior and the blatant disregard for the safety of the community including school children. The judge agreed to detain him.
